Paul Brothwood travelled to the Pyrenees as part of Honda Adventure Roads 2026, a unique adventure riding event bringing together a select group of riders from around the world.

Honda Adventure Roads 2026 was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences I have undertaken in recent years

As an Operations Manager, Chartered Environmentalist and lifelong motorcyclist, I am used to managing risk, solving problems and working as part of a team. What I discovered in the Pyrenees was that many of the same principles that apply in business also apply when riding a motorcycle through remote mountain terrain.

I joined a select group of 30 riders from around the world for Honda Adventure Roads 2026. For many of us, it was an opportunity to step outside our comfort zone and experience adventure riding in a way that few people ever get the chance to do.

My motorcycle for the event was the Honda Transalp.

The Honda Transalp proved itself on mountain trails, gravel tracks and remote routes across some of the most spectacular scenery in the Pyrenees.

Coming from a Suzuki Hayabusa, the transition was significant. The Hayabusa is built for speed and long-distance road riding. The Transalp is designed to tackle terrain that most road riders would avoid completely.

Over the course of the event we crossed mountain passes, rocky tracks, loose gravel, forest trails and remote sections of the Pyrenees that are inaccessible to most vehicles.

One of the first things that struck me was the emphasis on preparation.

Every rider carried emergency information. Blood groups were displayed on bikes and helmets. Safety briefings were detailed and professional. The planning behind the event was extensive.

It reinforced something I see every day in operational leadership. Success rarely happens by accident. Good outcomes are usually the result of preparation, teamwork and attention to detail.

Another highlight was the opportunity to ride alongside some incredible talent from the world of rally racing, including Dakar rider Tosha Schareina and adventure riding specialist Kirian Mirabet.

Watching their ability on difficult terrain was impressive, but what stood out most was their discipline and consistency. There were no shortcuts. No unnecessary risks. Just a relentless focus on doing the basics well.

That lesson translates directly into leadership.

In business, as in adventure riding, people often look for a silver bullet. The reality is that sustained success usually comes from doing simple things consistently well over a long period of time.

There were plenty of moments during the week when conditions became difficult. Steep climbs, rocky descents and sections where confidence mattered as much as technical ability.

Those moments reminded me that growth rarely happens when everything feels comfortable.

The Honda Adventure Roads experience pushed me to develop new skills, trust the training I had received and rely on the support of the wider team.

The same applies in professional life. Some of the biggest opportunities arrive when we take on challenges that initially seem beyond our capability.

Looking back, the scenery was spectacular, the riding unforgettable and the organisation exceptional. Yet the biggest takeaway was not about motorcycles.

It was about people.

Good people working together with a shared objective can achieve remarkable things.

That is true whether you are delivering critical infrastructure, improving safety performance, leading a team or riding a Honda Transalp through the Pyrenees.

For me, Honda Adventure Roads 2026 will remain one of those experiences that stays with you long after the journey itself has ended.
